The Jason Varitek award is new for the 2000 season. It is awarded to the outstanding scholar athlete in the state of Georgia participating in baseball. The award is named for Jason Varitek, the career leader at Georgia Tech (1991-94) in Games Played (253), AB 9914(, Hits (351), Doubles (82), Runs (261), RBI (251), Total Bases (610), IBB (303), SF (15), and Home Runs (57). Also a successful student at Georgia Tech, he is currently the starting catcher for the Boston Red Sox.

Mark Teixeira is from Severna Park, Maryland. This switch-hitting third baseman has drawn comparisons to Eddie Matthews and Mickey Mantle. His honors include: 1999 National & Acc Rookie of the Year, 1999 2nd team All-American, 2000 Dick howser Trophy, 2000 Baseball America & Sporting News College Player of the Year, 2000 Baseball America Summer College Player of the Year, 2000 Unanimous 1st team All-American, 2000 1st team All-ACC, and 2000 1st team GTE Academic All American.

A member of Team USA and a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award, in 2000 Mark batted .427 in 241 at bats. he scored 104 runs and drive in 80. 18 of his 103 hits were round trippers.
