Despite missing all of last season due to elbow surgery, John Smoltz, at age 33, already ranks as one of the finest pitchers in Atlanta history.
Smoltz's career peaked in 1996 when he won the NL Cy Young Award. He led the majors and also set an Atlanta record with 24 victories that year. He also was the winning pitcher in the All-Star Game and in four post-season games to give him a total of 29 for the year. A noted "big-game" pitcher, Smoltz had division-clinching performances in 1991, '96, and '99. He also owns a major league record 12 post-season victories. In the 1991 World Series, he worked 7 13 scoreless innings in Game 7, which the Braves eventually lost to the Twins, 1-0, in 10 innings. In 1992, he was named MVP of the NL Championship Series for going 2-0 with a 2.66 ERA against Pittsburgh. -- Text courtesy of Gary Caruso, ChopTalk magazine
