Until Javy Lopez came along, Bruce Benedict had logged more years as the Braves' starting catcher (six) than anyone else. Now the two are tied for that rank.

A two-time National League All-Star ('81, '83), "Eggs", as he was known by his teammates, was not regarded as a strong batter, yet he placed 11th in the league in hitting in 1983.

When the Braves won the NL West in 1982, Benedict led the league's catchers with a .993 fielding percentage and hit .389 over the last six weeks when the Braves were struggling to win the title.

A 12-year big league veteran, Benedict never played for any team but the Braves. However, he now works for the Mets as their major league advance scout.
