The Braves 400 Club recognized the Metro Atlanta High School All-Stars at a luncheon in the 755 Club, and almost 100 players, parents, coaches and 400 Club members came to honor the Team. For the second time in three years, Braves TV announcer Bob Rathbun addressed the All-Stars with an inspirational speech and made the plaque presentations.
The High School All-Star team is chosen by a subcommittee of the Braves 400 Club Board of Directors based on nominations from the coaches in the metro- Atlanta area. The talent runs deep, and the decision is always a difficult one.
Four coaches of nominated players had their teams
in the semi-finals of the state playoffs---Donnie English
of Kell, Tom Bass of Dunwoody, Paul Pierce of Collins
Hill, and David Childress of Etowah. There were also
two brothers represented by coach George Hansen of
Kennesaw Mountain and Keith Hansen of Alexander.
Donnie English, brother of former Braves scout Rob
English now with Red Sox, was named Coach of the
Year. Torre Langley of Alexander High School was
selected as 2006 Player of the Year and will be honored
again at the Braves 400 Club’s 2007 winter banquet.
As an integral part of the program, the Club presented a check to Team Georgia at the
annual high School All-Star Banquet on June 1.
The check presentation was done
to help fulfill the mission of the Braves 400 Club which is to
promote baseball at every level in Atlanta and Georgia.
Team Georgia consists of the top 20 graduating seniors and top 20 juniors in the State of Georgia as selected by high school coaches throughout the state. The participants compete in the Sunbelt Classic, which since Georgia’s first participation in 1990 has become a national showcase for high school baseball players. Well over 40 Team Georgia players have gone on to play Major League baseball including McCay McBride, Brian McCann, JD and Tim Drew, Johnny Damon and Randy Johnson and others.
